Overview

The Dual Training Maintenance Technician plays a vital role in supporting our manufacturing operations' safety, efficiency, and reliability while actively participating in an educational program. This role provides the unique opportunity to earn an associate degree in a relevant field while receiving on-the-job training and mentorship from experienced maintenance technicians.

 

The individual in this role will work to develop the technical skills and knowledge needed to maintain and repair manufacturing equipment, systems, and tools—ensuring they meet safety and operational standards. This position is part of CPI’s commitment to workforce development, aligning education with real-world experience to build a skilled and sustainable talent pipeline.

 

Starting at $27.00 plus an hour.

 

 

Responsibilities

  •  Learn and assist in performing maintenance tasks on a wide range of equipment, including production machinery, conveying systems, packaging equipment, and more.
  •  Participate in on-the-job training (OJT) activities such as job shadowing, mentorship, and cohort-based training to build core maintenance competencies.
  •  Work alongside experienced maintenance technicians to learn how to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems.
  •  Apply coursework knowledge in real-time by actively practicing preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs.
  •  Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and machine manuals to assist in maintenance and repair activities.
  •  Support efforts to maintain a safe and organized work environment, including adhering to ergonomic best practices.
  •  Document maintenance activities and participate in continuous improvement processes.
  • Communicate clearly with team members and supervisors regarding progress and learning goals.
  • Participate in facility improvement projects as needed.
  • Attend team and safety meetings.

Requirements:

 

  • High school diploma or GED required.· Eventual enrollment in an associate degree program in a relevant field (eg, Automation Engineering Technology AAS program at Hennepin Technical College) CPI Card Group will help you enroll in a program.
  • No prior experience required; some hands-on mechanical or electrical experience preferred.
  • Willingness to learn and develop mechanical, electrical, and technical skills through formal education and practical experience.
  • Good hand and arm dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and a strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds and work in a physically demanding environment.
  • Elementary English proficiency and communication skills necessary.

 

Core Competencies and Skills to be Developed:

  • Preventative maintenance techniques and ergonomic practices for operator safety.
  • Lubricants and lubrication systems to keep machinery running smoothly.
  • Troubleshooting and analysis to quickly identify and resolve equipment issues.
  • Inspection criteria and proper use of diagnostic tools for quality repairs.
  • Electrical systems, fluid and pneumatic power systems, including motor controls and PLCs.
  • Basic welding and metal fabrication skills to support maintenance and repair needs.
  • Safe operation of industrial belting equipment, compressors, boring mills, grinders and more.
  • Safe climbing practices on ladders and scaffolds for elevated maintenance tasks.

 

Physical demands and work environment: 

  • Work is conducted in a variety of positions, some awkward and close in nature, and requires standing, walking, climbing, crawling, bending, stooping and lifting of materials up to 50 pounds.
  • Environment is noisy and requires ear protection
  • Work involves good hearing, hand/eye coordination and normal color vision to be able to detect problems, to ensure quality product and to maintain safety
  • Work involves full use of hands/fingers in order to use precision or semi-precision equipment, tools or instruments requiring deft hand movements
  • Work involves dealing with fine detail, which can be tiring both mentally and physically
  • Works with rapidly moving machinery that may require quick adjustments to minimize waste and time
  • Use of tools and equipment require manual dexterity.
  • May require flexible work schedule to support training and production needs.
